Examining Japanese Bakumatsu Period Via Taiga Drama and Anime
For most Chinese people, Japan often evokes complex feelings: on the surface, it appears culturally close to us, but the deeper we delve into it, the more we become aware of the profound differences rooted in its core. The Bakumatsu period in Japan—arguably one of the most fascinating historical eras, alongside the Sengoku period—holds great significance not only because it directly gave rise to the Meiji Restoration but also because it serves as a mirror for understanding why China fell into the "Needham Puzzle" during the same historical timeline. This era has inspired numerous film, television, and anime works such as "Segodon," "Rurouni Kenshin," "Ryomaden," "Atsuhime," and more. In this course, we will explore through drama clips, literary works, and historical documents, appropriately referencing the frameworks of MYP Language and Literature and Individuals and Societies (no assessment part). I believe you will learn a lot from it!
