Unleashing Potential

Keystone Middle School spans Grades 6 through 9 when students experience tremendous intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth. By blending rich subject areas and learning strategies of the Chinese National Curriculum, International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, as well as our bilingual immersion and unique Chinese Thread, we open new and ever-greater opportunities for students to become confident, capable and globally prepared thinkers and doers.

Students engage increasingly original and sophisticated ideas that deepen and expand on concepts and skills introduced in Primary School. Through inquiry-, concept-driven and active learning in and across subjects, middle schoolers develop their intellectual curiosity and innovative thinking. They cultivate new forms of knowledge and master skills that lead to real breakthroughs in their knowledge.

These are grades in which students begin to see what they are truly capable of, and our program, faculty and staff support every aspect of this exciting time of development. Such learning and growth set the stage for success in our rigorous High School IB Diploma Programme, university, and beyond.

    A Bilingual Advantage

Middle School students continue to benefit from bilingual immersion, using both Chinese and English throughout the school day in all their activities. Our progressive model of language acquisition, affirmed by research and effective practice, ensures students build true linguistic competency and cultural understanding in Chinese and English. We also know that students in immersion programs demonstrate a high correlation between complex thinking skills and advanced linguistic abilities and possess excellent cognitive flexibility and problem-solving skills. Middle School language program is a gradual transition of emphasis between the two languages as many High School classes will be in English.

    The Chinese Thread

In Middle School, our unique emphasis on promoting Chinese culture and identity in a world contextthe Chinese Thread — is focused in particular subject areas. For example, guided by the Chinese National Curriculum Standards, students study the classics in literature and poetry, becoming skilled in the reading and writing of Chinese. We focus on World Civilization and Chinese Civilization in a Humanities-oriented program called China and the World. And students enroll in either Chinese Performing Arts and Chinese Visual Arts.

So Many Ways to Develop Your Talents

Beyond studies, through our Keystone Activities Program (KAP), school days include team athletics, music, the visual arts, theatre, student council, and community service. Students have the resources and opportunities to launch clubs devoted to their interests from filmmaking to robotics. Whether it’s staging theatrical productions, developing debating skills, leading the way in campus-wide environmental activism, participating in poetry contests, and launching many student-led community service initiatives, you will find a multitude of ways to explore your interests and talents. And in the process, you will develop new skills, form friendships, gain a sense of your own agency, and have fun.

Explore the World with Your Classmates

Learning by doing is an integral part of a Keystone education. And that is what our Experiential Learning Program (ELP) is all about. As a Keystone student, you and your classmates will embark on exciting adventures beyond campus. You will explore China’s rich cultural and natural heritage, visiting sites aligned with our world curriculum and the Chinese Thread. These trips often include community service activities. Additionally, our Outdoor Education Program promotes team building, leadership, and problem-solving skills with added benefits only nature can provide. Our dynamic location serves as a fantastic launching point for trips that make history, art, culture, and science tangible, giving students engaging and memorable ways to learn and grow.

Actively Creating a Better Tomorrow

Service learning at Keystone Academy embodies our shared value of compassion and acting with kindness, understanding, and empathy. It’s not just about doing good; it’s about actively engaging with others and learning from those interactions. We believe service is one of the highest forms of learning, and it’s integral to the education we provide. Students participate in a variety of local, national, and international service projects, gaining a deeper understanding of global issues and the needs of others. Whether it’s volunteering at animal shelters or raising awareness about world hunger, our students take the lead, demonstrating compassion and making a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond. Through service learning, students not only develop new skills but also cultivate a lifelong commitment to serving others with dignity and compassion.

Student Well-being

Physical and Mental Well-being

Student mental, emotional, and physical well-being drives everything we do at Keystone Academy. Our expert faculty and staff are trained in child protection and devoted to ensuring the health and well-being of our students at all times. Physical and mental well-being is also part of every student’s education — integrated into our curriculum through classes, student advisory groups in which each student has their own faculty advisor, as well as through our residential program. Our beautiful state-of-the-art campus provides many resources for recreation and fitness and our tightknit, caring community is always available for support. Throughout their time at Keystone, students learn ways to manage and promote their mental, emotional, and physical health to help set them up for healthy lives ahead.

LIFE AT KEYSTONE

Belonging to and Creating Community

b2_img17.jpg

We believe there is no better way to learn the art of becoming a citizen of the world than by participating in the creation of community. At Keystone, that means students, faculty, staff, and parents. While we place an emphasis on appreciation for the Chinese language, culture, and traditions, we are a diverse community hailing from 25 different countries and regions. Through our multicultural community we cultivate a wonderfully global mindset among our students.

    Fostering Personal Growth and Connections
    b2_img18.jpg

In Grade 9, students join Keystone’s residential life program, living on campus in our state-of-the-art fully furnished dormitories. They learn to live with a roommate, build independence and resilience, and practice authentic leadership and service. They also create an unrivaled sense of community with their classmates. Designed by experts in adolescent development, our residential life program includes a robust residential curriculum consisting of floor meetings, lesson plans, learning modules, speakers, dorm council presentations, family cluster meetings and panel discussions, as well as plenty of activities for fun and relaxation.

    b2_img19.jpg

Members of the Keystone teaching staff also live in residence with students, serving as Dorm Parents. Dorm Parents provide positive guidance for students, leading dorm meetings, tending to student needs, and even opening their homes for students. Dorm Heads and Dorm Parents work together with student leaders serving as Dorm Proctors to ensure everyone enjoys a safe and healthy environment conducive to study and growth. This positive environment inspires our residential students to build a sense of character and community, growing as independent learners and as members of the Keystone community. Belonging to such a community and helping to build it prepares our students for their futures like nothing else can.
